FEED NOVA SCOTIA
WHAT WE DO
SERVICES

SERVICES - WHAT WE OFFER
TO THE PEOPLE OF NOVA SCOTIA

We collect and distribute food to feed the hungry

We collect and distribute food to a network of approximately 150 Member Agencies province-wide. Our distribution is based on the fair-share system, using regional hunger statistics collected each year through the annual HungerCount survey, carried out by Food Banks Canada (http://foodbankscanada.ca/ )

We support our Member Agencies to increase the effectiveness of local programs and outreach

We offer practical support and consultation to the local community agencies that make up the FEED NOVA SCOTIA network. From issues of food safety to volunteer retention and organizational management, FEED NOVA SCOTIA staff support those involved in the front-line work of helping those in need.

We speak out on behalf of hungry Nova Scotians

As part of our efforts to eliminate chronic hunger in our province, FEED NOVA SCOTIA works with other community-based organizations to raise awareness of key issues that contribute to hunger in Nova Scotia. We participate in forums and coalitions and advocate on behalf of those in need. As members of the Food Banks Canada, we play a national role in advocacy and policy development around hunger issues. We help individuals overcome poverty and hunger through employment training

FEED NOVA SCOTIA’s Learning Kitchen operates three sessions per year, allowing disadvantaged adults the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and professional certification, embarking on successful careers in the food-service industry.

We offer information, referral and support through our phone helpline

Our phone helpline connects those in need with local agencies that can help. Our specially trained phone volunteers also provide lay counselling and support for individuals struggling emotionally or dealing with mental health concerns.

We provide volunteer opportunities for the community

Our volunteer department connects a dedicated team of approximately 400 individuals with meaningful opportunities to serve. Our volunteer placements include long-term and short-term positions, accommodating individuals, families and groups. From assisting on our fleet of delivery vehicles to helping out with data entry, our volunteers perform crucial functions and gain valuable skills and experience.

We provide meaningful opportunities to help those in need

FEED NOVA SCOTIA offers our friends and supporters many opportunities to make a difference for hungry people in our province. Our resource development department connects individual and corporate partners who have resources to share with meaningful opportunities to give through:

  • financial and in-kind giving
  • special events
  • corporate sponsorship opportunities
  • planned giving
We educate the public about hunger and the scope of hunger in our province

FEED NOVA SCOTIA believes that the first step in ending chronic hunger in our province is to educate the public about the scope of the problem. FEED NOVA SCOTIA works through print and web media to raise awareness of hunger issues in our province. Special activities are planned for June 6th of each year, which is National Hunger Awareness Day across Canada.
